They had Queues for each boarding group, so you get in line when you get to the airport, so not much chaos.

The 3rd group usually had a risk of not getting to sit next to each other, but I also think people are somewhat accommodating when NO ONE has assigned seats.

A lot of "Do you mind moving one row so my wife and I can sit in the row & middle seat together?" That's a lot harder when someone is like "I paid for this specific seat."
