Aside from something like bulkhead or exit rows, you just grab the next available seat. To a certain extent, I could see the family with obnoxious kids and sit away from them. Additionally, I hate the stratification of seating on other airlines - you want to sit closer to the front, that's an additional fee. That doesn't exist with Southwest. And from a boarding perspective, everyone knows their place in line. With the other airlines, although you know your seat, there is a jostling for position within boarding groups so that you have access to overhead storage.
