To show that the Dems are a big tent that can accommodate differing perspectives.

The Vance pick essentially doubles down on Trump and the Trump way. It's not going to motivate other factions in the party, like neocons and Reagan Republicans, to vote Trump. But they're not likely to vote Democrat either, so there's no fighting over them.
Harris' VP pick will be a white cis male moderate as a signal to those parts of the Democrat party who don't feel represented by a black/brown female lawyer from California whose parents were not born in America, that there'll still be people in the party who understand their point of view and will advocate for their interests. It's not reaching out to Republicans to switch their vote, but it shores up the base.
(The exception I see to SB's point is women voters - Democrats clearly see an opportunity to fight for the votes of women who normally vote Republican, but place priority on issues like women's health and place in society, and do not feel represented by a Trump-Vance ticket)
