Some were real and some were fake. Snoop, Ice-T and Eazy-E were all legit gang members. Dre and Ice Cube were not. Ice Cube studied architecture

in college. He grew up around the gangster lifestyle but wasn't involved at all.
Biggie and Jay Z both sold drugs in Brooklyn and down south before hitting it big in hip hop. Big was on a drug run to Virginia when his song Juicy blew up and was being dragged back to NY move on from his drug dealing.
There are so many guys that were legit in the drug or gang world.
There are many more who were studio gangsters and not legit.
