I need some of ST's wisdom. A baby bird is on the ground in my backyard. It can barely move and certainly can't fly. I assume it fell from its nest

but I can't see the nest in the trees. I can't leave it out there because my dogs will get it. I see a couple of birds that seem to be hanging around above it (they don't fly away when I come out). Does it make sense to make a sort of nest for it (maybe a shoebox with paper and stuff in it) and put it in the shoebox and move the shoebox to a table where it's safe from the dogs and hope the mother comes and feeds it? Do I give it water or something? I really have no idea. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ot might have been pushed out of the nest by its bigger siblings. -- nm

Thanks all. Still not sure what I'm going to do, but for the moment just going to try and let it play out and keep the dogs away until that seems

I think maybe make a nest of natural material and put it in the hedge/tree? Momma bird may reject it if it senses an unrecognised scent from the paper

this seems helpful advice also in line with what I saw from the fish and wildlife government site -- (link)

I think that's as good as you can do - unless you can somehow find the nest and put it back in. Thought that's not a guarantee it'll be ok either. nm
