the very origins of the games were for amateurs only, IE: not paid athletes meant it was for wealthy/nobility. that didn't end until it was obviously

an advantage for the communist block who would give athletes a 'job' but all they did was train.

meanwhile western participants had to resort to subterfuge like accepting prizes such as expensive watches which they could sell for support funds.
