LIR: zigbee2MQTT. I'm not sure I fully grasp all the details but MQTT is a pub/sub protocol where things publish (announce) their state and the server -- (edited)

(HA) subscribes (listens) to it (or a subset of it). Z2M is a bridge so that any zigbee devices information is published to an MQTT topic which HA listens to.

At the end of the day, it's really slick and also then your HA is an MQTT subscriber so that any other (WiFi, etc.) device that talks MQTT can easily be integrated (my Shelly motion/lux sensor in my garage does this)
