And if the breadth of 'oppo' research doesn't touch on something criminal I'm not sure I believe there's value in journalists publishing it off their own investigation either. There's plenty of publicly available information - like policy positions and a senator's voting record - that is more valuable to analyze for the potential it has to inform readers about how this person might lean on an issue in the future.
