Didn't albums and singles used to be released pretty separately from each other for like decades? -- (edited)

I know in England up into the 80s, bands would be like "Christmas is coming up but our album came out already. Quick, let's record a single!" And then that single would make its way on to some sort of album release eventually, or not.
In the US, we had Hollywood so if a band needed to stay relevant between albums, they would just get on a major soundtrack album. And then that single may or may not wind up on a proper album release way after the fact.
Now I'm not quite sure why albums are necessary, but I guess they must be.
