at least in California (and LA) here's the problem with "just build more housing!" state leg. finally requires all cities to permit new developments

or be subject to "builder's remedy" which lets developers essentially bypass the whole zoning process entirely

as soon as Karen Bass gets into office, when the single-family zoned neighborhoods start being whiny little bitches about the new requirements, she broadly exempts all of those neighborhoods from the law.

there are second order problems of affordability in the little new housing that does actually manage to go up but unless there's a stick, federally, to compel compliance with the red-tape and bureaucracy cutting, the housing itself ain't getting built in the places where it needs to be
