I'm not saying anything revolutionary here but lots of people lived in very protective bubbles from reality for a long time

and under an illusion that nothing bad could really happen. Gun violence for one, and COVID for another, really popped people's ideas that they were safe from calamity, so there had to be a conspiracy behind it. "This isn't really happening, because then I'd have to reconsider long held beliefs and that's even scarier". In some ways Trump winning was an inoculation for a lot of the left on that. It actually happened, there was a clear explanation and we had to face hard truths.
