GM, Firestone and Standard Oil conspired to loan money to local transit to convert to buses, and when the unused tracks were pulled up....

they canceled the loans, threw the transit companies across the nation in bankruptcy and required people to get their own cars.
only major cities kept their transit systems, usually by taking them over. (SF Muni, MTA etc)
used to be you could travel up/down the east coast by taking one tram to the end of the line, crossing the street to the next town's
