I’ve met him a few times. I wouldn’t work there, but he’s 100% using hyperbole for the headlines. Company has great perks and pays well.

$20/day child care (norm is around $160 with probably about half covered by government subsidy, depending on income). Full a la carte restaurant with multi-course meals for like $10. On-site gym with personal trainers and classes for like $15/month. Free barista-made coffee. Company’s sites are known for having the best facilities and food. I don’t doubt he’d axe it all if he thought it’d make him more money, but he’s incentivising people to stay in the office, not locking the doors.
A dozen or so years ago the company had a reputation for treating people badly and had unreal turnover, and almost went under when the iron ore price tanked. Now he seems to think happy people are more productive, and that churn hurts the company.
