The early reports had gunmen holding hostages on Main Street, U.S.A.
Then, what the police later confirmed was that it was just a fight near the MK monorail followed by some loud popping balloons.
There was a heavy police presence due to the allegations of a shooting. However, they scoured the area and never found a single bullet casing. So, it was all hysteria and paranoia.
You can find video of people just throwing down the stuff they bought and running to hide. Entire stores were abandoned in a matter of minutes, although they were mostly empty anyway since it was park closing.
Basically, what was reported on social media was weirdos lying for clicks. There was a real panic, an immediate police presence, and never anything resembling danger.
That story was VERY hard to cover because there was so much misinformation in the first 30-45 minutes. Then, we have the complexity that Twitter is unreliable now. So, even when the Orange County police department posts, a good reporter must take a beat to verify their authenticity.
