Our Europe Trip Report, Day 1!

It was my birthday. We were leaving from PDX in the afternoon, which I highly recommend. Icelandair. Fly over Canada, sleep on the way, arrive in the morning. The only sucky part is we're nearly a 2 hour drive away from PDX.

Icelandair also has flights from SEA and EUG is a lot closer to us. Maybe if we were to do it again, we'd go EUG to SEA. I bet we could do that and still not have to get up at 4 AM to make out first flight.

TSA Precheck is great. Easy check-in. Only one checked back (included with Icelandair). We all had carry-on bags, as well, although I'm curious about those new EU rules.

The only disappointment was that the new PDX terminal wouldn't be open until *the following day*!

We started early with the McDonalds and other random snack foods. I packed lots of snacks, but I doubt it would last us.

Last time I flew Icelandair, we each got a blanket and a bottle (box, actually) of Icelandic water as we boarded. Seemed like a pretty nice personal touch. But that was over a decade ago (which, I assume, was the same plane as this flight). No bottle or blanket this time but hardly a reason to complain.

I don't know if any of us slept during the flight. My oldest daughter takes medication that dehydrates her easily and she needs to be drinking a lot of water all the time. The little cups didn't quite cut it, and while she brought a Hydroflask with her (which she filled after security), she went through her's - and her sister's - and still it wasn't enough. I feel she's not very good at planning ahead, so I started laying down some rules for her afterwards and that made traveling for her a lot more comfortable.
