Canadian football fans, I have a question. What's up with the one point for missing a field goal that goes out of the end zone? -- (edited)

Why was that rule added? Seems wrong to reward a team for missing the field goal. Is it controversial?
I just learned about it and I'd watched a bunch of CFL videos over the years.
