This one I struggle with a bit more. There are demonstrably fewer*[Edit] people in poverty (at least in North America) today than fifty years ago. -- (edited)

The gap with the ultra rich does have impacts.
This notion of "I'm a citizen of the world" amongst 25-50year old rich folks appears to be affecting local philanthropic activity as just one example. There's a generation of benefactors taking family money out of particular communities.
I'm just not sure that it's a clean indication to say that it is impacting in a materially-poorer way politically.
