I'd love to know if it was a specific model of pager and if it was a physical attack variant of the info gathering sting the FBI did

It reminds me of the same social engineering efforts the FBI and associates did where you convince large number of target individuals to adopt tainted hardware

I think it would have been too unreliable to rely on Li-Ion to explode on its own.
