There are people who can only feel good about themselves by putting other people down.

They see success only in terms of material gain and surpassing others. It’s a zero sum game for them. “I can only win if you lose.” These people attract each other. Influence peddlers and sycophants. Braggarts, prideful, assholes. Because of how they live their lives, the oppression - often times physical and sexual - of others is natural to them, and often times criminal. Bullying, intimidation, theft, assault, rape. And their hubris means they think they’ll never get caught, but their arrogance means they almost always get found out.
What bugs me most about this is that a lot of this is learned behavior. Compassion and empathy is being traded for contempt. Even if Trump loses the election, it’s going to take a lot of work - a lot of reckoning for him and his cronies - for anyone who subscribes to his way of thinking to realize that it’s not the way to success and betterment.
