Keeping on the electricity and power theme, my home meter was upgraded to a smart meter earlier this year and I am fascinate at what it tells me...

I can now see consumption breakdowns by day, hour and every 15 minutes. Based on consumption I can almost tell exactly what what going on in the house at that time. Overnight consumption is often at 1 cent a kwh but goes up to as much as 50 cents a kwh when I am using the washer and dryer. And dang do those things use a lot. I was surprised at how little electricity is used by things such as lights, tv and other random electricity using items. Stove and dishwasher use some but washer and dryer might account for a quarter of use in the summer so far. We have a heat pump and even on the ac settings it does not seem to use a lot this summer. The meter is not time of use at this time, so same rate all day and adjusted yearly.
We have electric heat so while I know my monthly bills, it will be interesting to see if I can tweak consumption downward now that I can see usage every 15 mins (not real time but two days later but still very useful).
