Primarily, I think they are just trying to serve Hawaii, as it's one of the most demanded destinations of any loyal flyer base in the US. -- (edited)

People dream of going to Hawaii, of using their awards to Hawaii. There's a reason that basically every airline flies to Hawaii, even though some of the West Coast to Hawaii flight prices are dirt cheap (notsomuch from outside the West Coast though).
American, Delta, United, all put their codeshares on the inter-island flights of Hawaiian Airlines.
Jetblue doesn't fly to Hawaii but codeshares with Hawaiian Airlines.
Southwest doesn't codeshare with Hawaiian (not sure whose choice that is) so in order to serve the islands, they have to do it themselves.
I do expect that Southwest figured they were going to come in and dominate the market there and got a rude surprise.
