The 1st season pretty much stayed with the book but the 2nd season has LOTS of stuff not in the 2nd book. (Spoilers)

Tara is a VERY minor character in the books. Hardly ever mentioned. The 2nd book starts with the death of a character that has a major plot line in the series. A minor supernatural character in the 2nd book has been turned into one of the plot points in the series (and I hate it!)
Each book pretty much adds more characters, many supernatural. It's very evident to me that the author is winging it with each book. In a later book she adds a major character only to pretty much throw him away in a later book.
All that said, I did enjoy reading the books and am waiting for book 9 to come out in paperback soon.
