huh. it's weird that I know this, but I did some work in high-purity quartz a few years ago. Spruce Pine, NC is a major source of high-purity quartz.

shutting it down will have a big impact on supply and price. there's another big one in Russia and some *nebulous arm waving* in China, as well as a bunch of other projects in various places, but they probably can't start up or upscale enough to pick up the slack. also I don't know where Spruce Pine is, other than North Carolina.
