It's apparently 60 miles from where I grew up, but even locally, it's pretty obscure.

It's SW of Banner Elk and Sugar Mountain, which are the most popular locations in that area.
We apparently drive through it on the way to Charlotte and South Carolina, but it's made no impression on me whatsoever.
Now you've got me curious about the quartz process there. It's a small podunk town, even by Virginia/Tennessee/North Carolina standards.
