it's really just quartz that has nothing in it but SiO2, which is surprisingly rare. we were looking at parts per billion impurity for some elements.

you can process and remove some impurities, but you want to start with something that's probably minimum 98% pure. for some of the real high end stuff they purify it to 99.9999% SiO2 (which they call 6N, because 6 nines).
