I don't think you have to be, but it definitely appeals to that group by deliberately missing the point, a la Fight Club

Joker 2 feels like Fight Club 2.
I think it's a victim of it's success and its hardcore fans, who have driven off casual viewers. At the same time, it's alienating it's own audience with the musical business, and basically calls them pathetic losers. I expect there's some Gaga backlash among that crew too.
