cops are one thing - you can always rely on them to be the absolute worst, most violent and unpredictable element at a rally or protest. i think that has little to do with anything other than they are authoritarians and anything being done that's not what they like is cause for intimidation or violence.
as far as the other side, there's never any control over who shows up to those. every protest i've been to has attracted racists, bigots, and fascists of all kinds that have some agenda that's barely related to what's going on. it's tough - if you try to police that behavior yourself, you get called "violent" but then what's the alternative? just let them say what they want? let them make people feel unsafe? as a white dude, generally what i do at those protests is get between intimidating folks and their targets. i'm usually not the target and can at least be a gap that let's them protest in relative peace of have the chance to walk away without being followed. other folks do that as well and they are good to find and explicitly ask for help.
i hope you keep protesting, i hope you can find ways to feel safe. wish i was there to help - i'd 100% go out with you and your wife and be a human barrier :)
