A lot comes down to down payments too. People living paycheck to paycheck have to have working vehicles, and don't have a chunk of cash

laying around as a down payment. Perfect world, you save up for that down payment. But when your car shoots craps, you don't have the time to waste - gotta get to work.
And I think dealerships and salesman thrive on that shit.
