I just listened the 99% Invisible podcast on Spirit Halloween - it's not called Spirit because of Halloween!

the original owner had a dress shop, called Spirit (Something... Dresses? Women's Wear? something like that).
When it was going out of business he knew from watching the dancewear shop across the street do good business at Halloween that there was a market.
So, he went out, bought a bunch of costumey stuff and made his shop Spirit Halloween that first year.
The rest is history.
