I kind of think those problems develop due to homeless a lot of times, not the other way around.

You end up homeless. Your mental health gets worse. You lose hope or want an escape. You get tangled in drugs. And unless someone or something pulls you out of that, you’re kind of done.
Granted, this is only my perception, my moderately brief conversations on public transport, and from watching a ton of Intervention.
