To recover an unsaved Word document, you can:

Select File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents
Select the file and then select Open
Select Save As to save the file

If that doesn't work, your temp folder should include recent files. They'll probably have some weird characters in the file names, but they should be accessible.
