And even if the odds were known, the impacts of a Trump victory balance them out.

Simplifying, but if the costs of a Trump victory (retribution) are 5x the costs of a Harris victory (eating crow), then it would make mathematic sense to not endorse if the chances of a Trump victory are 1 in 5.
(It's obviously a cowardly and disappointing decision by WaPo.)
