It's so unlikely to be true that is gets a mystique to it, which isn't helped by her androgynous look (which is mostly to cover for the fact that she is, in a celebrity sense, not very pretty. i.e. she made it in this industry due to talent rather than being a pussycat doll)

If by some bizarre twist it was true that she born a hermaphrodite (which I don't for a second believe) her parents could have afforded to have it fixed. IIRC, she's from Westchester $$
