In response to "I'm curious if this is more about overall economics or if they're trying to focus on a certain type of flyer group. -- nm*" by Max

A bit of balancing economics, a bit of trying to not have TOO many elites (whatever that means in their definition), a little about credit card spend.

You can earn top tier status on American and Delta by using their branded credit cards and *never stepping on a plane*. It takes a lot of credit card spend and why on earth would you need status if you aren't flying, but it's possible.

Delta in particular makes tons via their AMEX cards. I'm sure AA makes plenty of money with their Citi relationship.

United has been the most difficult to earn elite status qualification points from the credit card. They've made it a bit easier with this update. Not as easy as DL/AA, and UA still has a cap, but they've made it easier.

So in theory: raise the requirements to qualify a bit, make it easier to earn qualification points from the co-branded United chase card, drive more spend to the United Chase cards.

That might be the biggest net of it.
