it's real to him, or at least feels that way. that's the tough part, but

what he needs to realize is that unrequited feelings are a fast-track to crazy and pain and other badness. wasting emotion and time and effort when there's no positive outcome to be had is keeping him down and closed to requited goodness.

helping him see he's doing the equivalent of banging his head against a door that will never be opened would be the way to go, imo.
