Ford wins reelection, but because he took over prior to the halfway part of a term, he can't run again in 1980. Assume the same foreign economic disaster happens & Iran....the Democrats likely win in 1980 since Reagan can't run against Carter's failures.
Reagan's rise is postponed at least 4 years and might never come to pass given how the economy took off in 1982-83 after the inflation subsided.
I think it's plausible that that decision impacted more than just about any decision in the last 50 years outside of the Elian Gonzalez return.
