Smart Wool, Darn Tough, REI or other similar wool socks. Merrill has great shoes for all weather. REI is a great place to shop for all of these. -- (edited)

Sierra Trading Post also has a decent selection of many of these.

It's not going to be that cold in northern England in December, not Chicago level, But you might have snow and maybe around zero, but it's warmer there than much of the Midwest. Warmer types of running/hiking shoes with wool socks will do.

- Yep. I've been in February, and my requirement was that it had to be warmer than Chicago, but not tropical. (still had to carry those winter coats) - . Nov 4, 10:29
