To a large extent, what happened yesterday was a result of the post COVID era and pandemic hangover

Most advanced democracies booted their parties in power after COVID. Harris (and Biden) bore the brunt of the blame, fairly or unfairly. The result was the return of Trump.
Add to that the prospect of electing a woman of color, and you're about two bridges too far for the majority of American voters.
But people (and countries) get the government they want, and deserve. The American people are about to get several years of pure, unalloyed Trumpism. When the negative consequences of that begin to manifest themselves (which I expect to happen fairly quickly) I will have no sympathy for Trump's supporters who bear those. This time around, there is no doubt who Trump is, or what he's going to do. Unfortunately, those who didn't support him will bear those burdens as well.
