My sense of it is that the Dems in general and Kamala in particular are intellectual and speak that way.

Trump speaks like an idiot to idiots. And that resonates. A very big portion of the country is uneducated. They feel that Dems talk down to them and think they are stupid. They are correct (at least in my opinion they are, in fact, stupid). They feel like he's one of them because he says the same stupid crap that they do. And apparently that's enough to convince them.
Many of them are single-issue voters. All they need is one of the candidates to say what they want to hear about their issue. For most of them it was "the Dems made gas cost more, I'll make it cost less". He's lying of course and some of them know that. But he sold it. The Dems try to teach voters, but they don't want to learn, they want to blame. And he gives them targets to blame.
It really just comes down to the vast majority are not smart people and this is what they want.
