I think less abandoned than drifting apart. The civil rights era alienated a lot of working class white people from the Democrats.

By the 1980s, the Democrats couldn't get elected with their existing voters, and couldn't get elected with pro-working class policies, and so they went where the votes were - the college educated, and adopted more neoclassical economic policies.
