It's because the working class feel they are fighting with the poor over the scraps.

Democrat policies to support the poor, to support immigrants, etc reduce the share of the scraps available to the working class.
Democrat policies - eg Obamacare - are for everyone (as they have to be because (1) it's fair and (2) Democrats are a coalition of interests and all members of the coalition have to buy in), but by treating the working class the same as everyone else rather than a special status (eg "why should Dreamers get the same access to healthcare and social services as me, an American with a job?"), those people feel there is no one listening to their specific concerns or trying to win their vote.
