I need help refining this crudely stated opinion.

In my experience, if the Democratic Party wants to recapture the working class voters and otherwise follow the advice of Sanders, AOC, et al., then Buttigieg is a great choice.
Yes, he's gay, but he's not an "uppity gay man." He is bland, vanilla, white, polite, Midwestern gay man.
And in my opinion, most of the folks in that working class category would choose a gay man like him before a woman. Or a person of color. Especially a woman that they perceive as part of the "coastal liberal elite" (like from California or New York).
I am striving to avoid getting into the Oppression Olympics here, and I'm largely going on intuition -- so I'm now interested in seeing more exit polling data from the last couple Presidential elections.
That's my realpolitik take for now.
