I just took our two cats in on Tuesday. We have one of these carriers. It is *so* nice because I can take the top off and set the cat in it and -- (edited)

basically build the carrier around him instead of trying to jam him into the door
Those cardboard ones work good since they close on the top but they don't last

The blood drawing bite and scratch wounds occurred when trying to even pick up the cat to get it to the carrier.

I have similar ones. I can generally get them in through the door but the vet's had to take the top off to get Mojo out :) -- nm

I used to take my cat to the vet in a pillowcase. She never freaked out. Not sure where I read about it. Worked every time. -- nm
