whats that fable about a prisoner who gets a message rescue on the way, but guards are going to cut an arm/leg off each day his choice

and its just a cruel ploy to have the poor prisoner figure out which limb he could live without while living long enough to be rescued not realizing it was just a joke to give him false hope.
