I think it could in theory work if you actually just limit the 'playoffs' to the playoff contenders, and then don't do this arbitrary cut-off...but...

you have 40 drivers on the track, only 16 at most are in the playoffs, but 24 can fuck up and ruin someone's season because they suck
it'd be like letting in the 7th inning of the NLCS, you let a Chicago White Sox reliever come in and face Ohtani, Betts and Freeman in a tie game.
Hell, 16 guys in the first 5 races of the 10-race playoffs, then cut to 8. As it stands, if you get caught behind two guys who spin out, you better win the next week because you're done otherwise.
