Another similar thought would be to physically section out groups to be called up one group at a time. -- (edited)

Where everyone in a given group would be roughly the same place in line, and people could leave and come back to the same group if they needed to, then once their group is called they can be ordered by a numbered place in line. (kind of like a Southwest Airlines boarding model)
