That advice isn't entirely correct. In CA, if he gets married, her income is considered community property and he may have to pay more -- (edited)

in support if his ex files for it. Therefore, she is contributing to his ex and children. I had a friend in a longterm relationship who never wanted to get married. She changed her mind after 17 years, but had she married him earlier, he would have had to pay more.
