It's Thanksgiving so fuck it. How come people need some kind of "race" just to be in shape? Have you tried just eating less and being in shape? -- (edited)

When I first noticed all these races being run, they were all for charity. "5K for one eyed African ophans." Now I notice people run races just because they are there? My guess is people are thirsting for being a part of a community with other people.
?
Edit: I understand the being a part of a community because volleyball. That's it. right?

Some people are good are running and view it as a competitive outlet. Not everyone who runs is doing it for weight loss. Most runners are fit as hell. -- nm

I imagine it’s similar to any other goal really. The need for a bar to be set, sometimes by others, and then the structure to get you there. -- nm

Volleyball implies being on a team, even if it's just one other. Jogging, like swimming seems rather internal, lonely in a crowd -- nm

Lol this is my spirit animal. I've gone from 220 to 180 in two years solely because of eating less

it's several hours away from your family when they're all under the same roof, if that's an appealing prospect -- nm

Two for me: 1) Community, 2) I like setting goals and striving to accomplish them. I’m less likely to run in general if I’m not training for something -- nm

Everyone has their own reasons. I run them because it gives me a concrete objective to work towards and measure myself against. -- (edited)

We're competitive and it's a personal challenge. I'm physically unable to run but I can't resist a challenge in other things.
