Though with regards to dying, is it really an advancement that current gaming is more forgiving?

I get that our gaming experiences were tempered by arcade mechanics which just wanted to take our quarters / tokens but is it a bad thing when you part with a party member after 20 minutes?

I mean, how attached could have you been ;-)
