Question for anyone who has been unemployed in the last couple years or anyone familiar with current HR or hiring practices....

Has anyone ever got a job specifically because of LinkedIn? I do use mine and while I use it some and have used it to identify or apply for certain jobs, I was talking with a community networker in the field and he said all hiring practices are now a combination of resume review software and connecting with the right person in a company through LinkedIn. I need to have at least 500 LinkedIn connections and I need to be reaching out on LinkedIn to at least 15 people a day and finding the people making hiring decisions.
Anyone else heard anything like this? TIA :)
